What’s with the “Nickels for Nature” jar on the sales counter at the Village Store on Main Street? A group of eighth graders at Community School of Davidson has learned all about the “Nickels” campaign, and is hoping to help expand it into a re-usable bag shopping initiative for Davidson’s Main Street.
We have news about that project, plus a plea for donations to the Ada Jenkins Center from Davidson Elementary’s principal, and a play being staged at Davidson IB Middle.

Happy third graders and their teachers from the Community School of Davidson visited at The Pines yesterday helping residents make marshmallow Santas.
The traditional Christmas Vespers at Davidson College occurred this past Sunday evening. Following on the heels of a most successful (and crowded) “Christmas in Davidson” event, we can now officially proclaim the holiday season has arrived. As always, thanks to the Davidson Garden Club for the beautiful hanging baskets and wreaths which are a “signature item” for our town’s beauty during the holidays.
Exams for college students begin later this week and soon the campus will empty as young people head for home. How we residents love the quieter days in our town – not to mention ample parking spaces! Be sure to find a space in town this Wednesday evening to visit the public library and hear Carolyn Noell speak. Also keep your eyes peeled for a vintage 1966 Mustang parked along Main Street with Sterling Martin at the wheel. Quite a story behind this ‘Stang!” Read the full story

A special Thanksgiving meal for the staff at Community School of Davidson.
Parent volunteers at Community School of Davidson used the Thanksgiving holiday as a chance to offer a special “thanks” to their teachers, serving up a full holiday meal during a “Thanks for Giving” luncheon (see photo at left).
The charter school does not have a separate cafeteria, so teachers usually eat with their students in their classrooms. The Nov. 18 luncheon transformed the gym into a dining room, with elegant place settings and a buffet line.
“This gives the teachers some time together,” said parent volunteer Eileen Simon.
School Notes this week includes news of state chorus honors for two Cannon students, Joanna Copio and Stephen Metz, plus an update on the charity golf tournament organized by two Woodlawn students, Scott Murr and Darius Knott, and news of a special plaque for Gethsemane Baptist from Davidson’s newest football team. We have the honor roll from Davidson IB Middle, and calendar listings of events at “Christmas in Davidson” and more. Read the full story

Updated 2:30 p.m.
Power came back on around 2:15 p.m. in downtown Davidson after a nearly three-hour outage caused by a broken transmission line knocked out power to several thousand customers. 8th grader Laura Knight kicked off a group dance that concluded Sunday's celebration.
It began as notes on a restaurant napkin outlining plans for “the perfect school.” Those notes became a private elementary school that opened in Davidson eight years ago, then became a state charter school, then an elementary and middle school. Sunday evening, Community School of Davidson evolved yet again, breaking ground for a new high school campus.
“I can see what this high school is going to look like,” Dr. Ralph Pillsbury told the crowd gathered on a Read the full story

Katelyn Labrijn accepts a donation from a parent in the car line Friday at Community School of Davidson.
You can almost see the word “Thank you” forming on the lips of Katelyn Labrijn in the photo at right as she accepts a donation to the Davidson-Cornelius Day Care Center. Katelyn was one of several students who worked the Community School of Davidson car line Friday afternoon to raise money for the day care, which is reeling from a financial crisis. Katelyn isn’t the only one saying thank you – the center board president was also full of thanks as she watched the students collecting cash.
In other school news, we have reports on how Woodlawn School students will be joining the DavidsonReads town events, an upcoming school picnic at Bailey Middle that will feature the local student band, Cynergy, plus sports scores and a calendar of school events. Read the full story
