We celebrate lots of innovations and traditions here in Davidson, and this week has certainly brought some unique firsts: New crosswalk safety flags on Griffith Street and new trash and recycling cans on Main Street.
That’s right: We had a dedication for new trash cans. Turns out that project has been in the works for a few years, since being proposed by a group of Community School of Davidson students. Meanwhile, the new crosswalk flags also came out of a project at the school.

Students at Community School of Davidson have joined forces with the Town of Davidson to test a new crosswalk safety tactic: Brightly colored flags pedestrians can use to get the attention of passing drivers. Eighth graders in a CSD Friday “practicum” course designed the flags and installed the first ones on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Griffith and Watson streets, near Sadler Square. They supplied this public service announcement video to explain how the flags work.

Davidson Housing Coalition volunteers prepared more than a thousand sets of eight luminaria – white paper bags with candles – for Saturday night’s 12th annual “Noel for Neighbors” fundraiser. In the end, they ran out. Hundreds of neighbors across town joined in, lining yards and sidewalks with the flickering holiday lights, making it the biggest night in the event’s history. Combining soybeans is a fall activity for famers

A busy day this past Tuesday with voting at Davidson’s two precincts: the Town Hall, Precinct 206, and Hopewell Baptist Church, Precinct 127. Congratulations to our Hopewell Precinct 127 which was identified as the top voting precinct in the county. Chief Judge at Hopewell, Meg Clark, reported in an email that “Pct. 127 won the turnout race in Mecklenburg County. The numbers from the Board of Elections, which will probably change a bit once the provisional votes are counted, show us at 73%. There were only 4 Mecklenburg Co. precincts above 70%.” Well done #127! Now instead of focusing on political signs, we can enjoy the beauty of combines harvesting fall soy beans just east of town.
Today Around Davidson applauds the twelve Boswell Family Faculty Fellowships winners, talks with Karen Toney about her “bike,” catches up on a promotion for our Postmaster Sheri Cole, and learns of a pen pal project at the Community School of Davidson. There is also a note about Tom Cotter missing the NYC Marathon. Read the full story
