At school board, move to halt consideration of IB school move fails
As Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders continue their comprehensive review of the school system, they’re hosting another round of forums on proposals for school closings and other changes. A forum specifically focusing on north Mecklenburg schools is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at Hopewell High School, 11530 Beatties Ford Road.

Laney Edwards, the assistant principal at Davidson Elementary School, is moving to another school after eight years in Davidson. Meanwhile, CMS officials said Tuesday they will shift to “performance-based” pay beginning this year. Hough High held its first-ever homecoming last week – without a queen. Davidson Day hosts a world-renowned anthropologist for an evening talk next week. And Davidson Elementary’s Tigers on the Prowl running program begins its 8th year.

Davidson IB Middle School parents and staff members say they are disappointed school officials have suggested closing the high-performing school to help cope with budget woes.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board members met last week to discuss possible changes at 37 public schools to help the district save money in the future. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders took the first step in what could become a massive reshuffling of students Tuesday when they released a list of 32 schools that are candidates for expansion, downsizing or even closing. Staff members note the list is a starting point and could grow or shrink in coming weeks.
The list includes schools across the county, from Ballantyne Elementary in the south to Mint Hill Middle in the east, Davidson IB Middle in the north and Harding University High in the west.

The first day of school always brings a combination of excitement, nerves and a few snags, and all the more so when it’s opening day for a new school, William A. Hough High School Principal Teresa Cockerham said Wednesday.
Hough High, one of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s newest schools, opened for business Wednesday when the first bell rang at 7:15 a.m. But students continued to come through the front door late, until about 7:30 a.m., because of the biggest snag of the day – a line of cars reaching back to Bailey Middle School.
