Davidson and Mooresville are among 13 area counties and towns receiving grants this week to continue planning and building the Carolina Thread Trail, a 15-county network of trails, greenways and conservation corridors
in North and South Carolina. The grants, totaling $689,240 and covering 38 miles of trails, were announced Monday by the Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board.
Davidson applied for and received $27,640 to acquire land or rights-of-way to extend the Kincaid Greenway about one-half mile. The extension would cross South Street near Davidson Elementary School, run west of McEver Fields and north to Spring Street, along an existing utility right of way and local streets. The Catawba Lands Conservancy, which works to protect land across the Greater Charlotte region, has named 1984 Davidson College grad and former Bank of America executive Thomas W. Okel as executive director.
Mr. Okel takes over on Oct. 3, replacing Dave Cable, who announced in March he was leaving the post. Read the full story

Construction is nearly complete on the 1.1-mile West Branch Rocky River Greenway, which snakes through the River Run neighborhood and along the river east of downtown Davidson. Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation is constructing the trail with the help of $1.1 million in federal stimulus funds. Read the full story

Money to go for design, land acquisition, trail construction in iredell

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation announced Thursday a $250,000 grant to the Carolina Thread Trail to support the development of Iredell County’s section of the regional trail network. The grant will support land acquisition and trail construction for segments identified by the citizens and leadership of Iredell as part of the county’s Greenway Master Plan.

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Thread Trail has received a $250,000 gift from Amy and Philip Blumenthal and the Blumenthal Foundation.
The Thread is a planned network of trails and conservation areas covering 15 North and South Carolina counties with a population of more than 2 million people. Plans call for it to pass through Davidson and surrounding areas. Read the full story

The Town Board Tuesday night approved $276,140 in budget cuts that will help the town pay its share of a budget shortfall at the MI-Connection cable system. Board sets 2010 dates for quarterly retreats
Davidson’s Town Board meeting on Tuesday night, Feb. 9, includes a vote on a series of budget amendments – including cuts needed to cover a budget shortfall at the town-owned MI-Connection cable TV system.
