Award winners are in the news this week. Woodlawn School students grabbed medals in the National History Day competition last weekend. And Davidson Elementary School fifth graders were among the award winners at the regional Math Fair recently. A new $3 million performing arts center is a major focus of the campus expansion.

CONCORD – Cannon School has unveiled the largest fundraising campaign in its history, a $7 million drive to pay for new arts, athletics and middle school facilities. At a kick-off party at the Fillmore in Charlotte Saturday night, officials said they’ve already raised $5 million since the campaign’s “quiet phase” began last year. Read the full story

W.A. Hough High School’s Combined Choirs Holiday Concert is Thursday night at the school in Cornelius. Community School of Davidson students will present a dance concert Saturday titled “Catching Fire,” inspired by second book in “The Hunger Games” series.. And Davidson Elementary School’s Math Olympiad students earned perfect scores in a November challenge. Congratulations are due this week to students for all sorts of accomplishments. The W. A. Hough High School Army JROTC Husky Battalion won the Superintendent’s Cup, making it the number one JROTC program in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district. Meanwhile, St. Mark Catholic School placed 13th overall in the state Science Olympiad, with two students taking first place in their event and several others placing in the top ten. Also, Davidson Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team made a strong showing at the state finals, and 56 Cannon School students received national recognition in Spanish. Read below for details. Bailey Middle School faculty and staff members this month paid tribute to one of their own, seventh-grade science teacher Mark DeSarro, who died unexpectedly Feb. 25. In other school news, Davidson Elementary students more than doubled their fundraising goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and parents of rising fifth-graders are invited to learn about Cannon School’s middle school program April 12. Also, the Governor’s School of North Carolina selects area students to participate in its summer programs, Davidson Day School students think about their futures during the school’s Career Day, and the Community School of Davidson hosts its first play festival. Guests are invited to join Davidson Elementary “Tigers on the Prowl” to walk or run laps throughout the month of March. Also, W.A. Hough High School this week welcomes a new School Resource Officer, Winston Douglas, and principal Terri Cockerham is expected to return in two weeks. And, this week the Board of Education approved a 185-day calendar for the 2012-13 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools school year, St. Mark Catholic kicked off a campaign to raise money for juvenile diabetes research, and Cannon School students are preparing for the MathCounts state finals.
