Local musicians and Davidson basketball highlight the weekend schedule around the area. The lineup includes an appearance Thursday by Summit Coffee’s songwriter of the year Jackie Moseley and a special After Holiday Jam at The Birdsnest, both in Davidson. Meanwhile, Davidson College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have home games this weekend. This year’s festival has carriage rides, entertainment & an ice skating rinkDecember arrives this week and with it the annual Christmas in Davidson festival on Main and South Main streets in Davidson. More than 20,000 people are expected for the festivities, which run 6-9 nightly from Thursday to Saturday, Dec. 1-3. This year’s celebration includes trolley and horse-drawn carriage rides, food and shopping, and – for the first time – a Holiday Ice Skating Rink at South Main Square.

Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday will hear updates on the Red Line commuter rail project and planning for the area around a future commuter rail station along Jackson Street, behind the post office. Commissioners are being asked to adopt a resolution backing a proposed bike and pedestrian trail along the Red Line tracks, which would aid in seeking grants for the trail. Commissioners also will vote on minor budget amendments, a change in Town Manager Leamon Brice’s compensation, and on major amendments to the town’s sign ordinance. Read the full story

If you were around in the 1970s and 1980s, you probably remember “Schoolhouse Rock,” a TV segment aimed at teaching kids the difference between adjectives and adverbs or how a bill becomes law in Congress. Now it’s on the stage. A cast of local teens from Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. youth theater will perform a stage version of the show called “Schoolhouse Rock Live!
