Game offers an intriguing answer to ‘Who will replace Curry?’

INDIANAPOLIS – The Davidson men’s basketball team didn’t get a win Saturday afternoon, but what happened in the Cats’ season opener here at Hinkle Fieldhouse wasn’t a total loss.
The Wildcats played 10th-ranked Butler even for much of the game before losing 73-62 before a crowd of 6,713. Sophomore forward Ben Allison led the Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior point guard Brendan McKillop scored 11 and had five rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes. Read the full story

South Carolina shut out Davidson, 4-0, to advance to the second round of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament Friday night. Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team also came up short, losing its season opener at Nebraska.
Davidson plays Marist in its football season finale today at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium. And the men’s basketball team plays at Butler.

No, the stands weren’t full, and no, play did not revolve around a single star, but yes, the Davidson College men’s basketball team can win in the post-Stephen Curry era. The Wildcats handily defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 87-65, in an exhibition game Saturday night at Belk Arena.
Last year’s star Stephen Curry now plays in the NBA, so all eyes are on how the team will perform without him.
“We got better tonight,” said Coach Bob McKillop after the game.
