The first residents moved in four years ago at Antiquity Cornelius, between the end of South Street in Davidson and downtown Cornelius. Today, five years after the project was approved, a total of 207 homes or townhomes have been built. Developers now say it could wind up being about half the originally planned 1,000 units. About 100 people bundled up Saturday morning and walked in support of the Ada Jenkins Center, a non-profit health and human services organization serving Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville and South Iredell. Individuals and teams gathered at the Antiquity neighborhood in Cornelius for a Walk-a-Thon fundraiser for the center, which last year served 19,454 individuals through its various programs. Now that the new Catawba Avenue extension and rebuilt intersection at N.C. 115 have opened in downtown Cornelius, town officials say the next step is to close permanently two nearby streets that cross the railroad tracks.

Here’s a 3-minute video from DavidsonNews.net reporting on the Friday, May 14, 2010, opening of the N.C. 115/Catawba Avenue intersection in downtown Cornelius. The intersection extends Catawba Avenue across the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks into the Antiquity Cornelius project, which Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte said ultimately could transform downtown Cornelius.

One-by-one a police utility vehicle, a fire truck, a vintage car and the Mayor of Cornelius on a bicycle made their way across the railroad tracks at N.C. 115 and Catawba Avenue Friday afternoon, christening a new intersection that the mayor said ultimately could transform downtown Cornelius. The new entrance to the Antiquity Cornelius development in downtown Cornelius is expected to open in late April, but utility work beginning next week means the existing intersection will have to close before it can open fully. N.C. 115 will be closed at Catawba Avenue Tuesday, March 16, through Thursday, March 25.
