Bill Thunberg, a former Mooresville mayor long active in regional affairs, is the new executive director at the Lake Norman Transportation Commission. Mr. Thunberg will take over Jan. 1 from Carroll Gray, who is stepping down after three years in the job.

After a year of work, consultants on Wednesday will unveil a funding strategy for the proposed
Red Line commuter rail project from Charlotte to Mooresville. Their report will come at a meeting of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission at 5:30 Wednesday at Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center in Charlotte.
Officials and consultants also will share their draft financing plan with local officials and citizens at a public meeting in Mooresville on Dec. 13. Read the full story

South Street will be closed at South Main Street Friday night for the running of the Summit Coffee Twilight 5K, a race on town streets and greenways. The road will close around 5 p.m., and the race is expected to begin at 6 p.m. Read the full story

Davidson Mayor John Woods was among several area mayors re-elected Tuesday, while voters in Mooresville chose a new leader – Miles Atkins – who stepped up from an at-large seat on the Mooresville board. Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain kept her job despite a challenge, while Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte ran unopposed.
The results could mean at least some continuity as the towns continue to cooperate on regional issues. They include the MI-Connection Communications System, which Davidson owns with Mooresville, and transportation issues, including I-77 widening and bringing the Red Line commuter rail to the Lake Norman area. The N.C. Department of Transportation says repaving could begin soon on major roads across Mecklenburg County, including Grey and Davidson-Concord roads in Davidson and several back roads in Huntersville. Meanwhile, state engineers also are planning a resurfacing of N.C. 115 in north Mecklenburg, and Davidson officials and cycling advocates are lobbying for a road design that accommodates bicycles. HUNTERSVILLE – State and local officials on Thursday outlined a new approach to developing a commuter rail line from Charlotte to the Lake Norman area. They’re now pitching the 25-mile train line as an economic development initiative that would move freight as well as commuters. And they are proposing to create a new regional transit authority that would work across government lines to plan and raise money for the Red Line project. Read the full story
