U.S. Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti ran away from the field at the Summit Coffee Leprechaun Loop 8K Saturday night, finishing nearly four minutes ahead of the second place finisher in the race along Davidson streets and greenways. Jill Rafiee of Huntersville was the top woman finisher in the race, which attracted 235 runners and raise money for Levine Children’s Hospital. Story in SPORTS»

Davidson College’s men’s basketball team climbed back from a wide margin to within 7 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Louisville Cardinals beat the Wildcats 69-62 to advance into the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Portland Thursday. Story and photos in SPORTS»

Clint Mann found an opening in the lane for a dunk and Davidson’s men’s basketball team held on in the last few seconds of the second overtime to beat Western Carolina, 93-91, for the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament championship Monday night in Asheville. The victory sends the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament. Story coming in SPORTS»

Davidson’s men’s basketball team beat Elon Sunday night, 83-67, to earn a spot in Monday night’s Southern Conference championship game in Asheville. The Cats will face Western Carolina, which beat UNCG in Sunday’s other semifinal. See the story IN SPORTS»
In the women’s tournament earlier Sunday, Samford used a big first half to open up a lead on the Wildcats, then held off a Wildcat surge in the second half to claim a spot in Monday’s final. The Bulldogs won 62-51, ending Davidson’s hopes for a league title. Full story in SPORTS»

Katrin Chiemeka scored a career-high 19 points, including 13 in the final 7:21, to lead Davidson to a 61-54 women’s basketball victory over Appalachian State Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 1,271 at Belk Arena. The win put the Cats in 1st place in the Southern Conference, just a couple of weeks ahead of the conference tournament. Story in SPORTS»
