Mandy Halbersleben made a foul shot with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime and Alex Thompson hit five points during the extra period as Davidson College’s women’s basketball team beat UNC-Greensboro Monday afternoon. The win lifted the Wildcats to 6-0 and a first-place ranking in the Southern Conference, their best start ever.

As we begin the first full week of the new year, schools are back in session. Preschoolers can join Main Street Books’ story hour Tuesday morning. Also Tuesday, Davidson Day School dedicates its new arts and athletic center, culminating in a 7 p.m. basketball game vs. Woodlawn School. 
The Town Board has a special meeting Tuesday to take up a pair of affordable housing tax credit issues. The Charlotte Writers Club North hosts poet Janice Moore Fuller on Thursday. And Saturday, Beth Shalom of Lake Norman presents a concert with the vocal group The Shabbatones.
On the sports calendar, Davidson’s men’s basketball team travels to Duke on Wednesday, while the women’s team hosts Georgia Southern on Saturday. The Rocky River Road Club’s 11th annual Polar Bear Ride, with 50- and 100-kilometer routes, kicks off Saturday morning at 10. Read the full story

How did Davidson’s Wildcats get their name? Find out when Sterling Martin leads a free program on “The History of Sports at Davidson College” Sunday, Jan. 18, 4 p.m. at Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. It’s hosted by Davidson Historical Society. Mr. Martin is a 1963 Davidson College graduate and athlete, who retired after over 40 years with the college athletic department and as director of the college’s Lake Campus. Stephen Curry scored 29 points and Will Archambault chipped in 14 to help Davidson College defeat the College of Charleston, 79-75, in Charleston Monday night. Andrew Goudelock had 21 points for Charleston. The Cougars outscored Davidson 42-35 in the second half but came up short in the game broadcast on ESPN-U. Davidson basketball forward Andrew Lovedale has been named one of 30 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to an NCAA Division I student-athlete in nine sports. His nomination follows another honor last week for star forward Stephen Curry, who was named Sporting News magazine’s College Athlete of the Year.
Davidson is back in action Monday, Dec. 29, when the Wildcats travel to Southern Conference South Division rival College of Charleston. The game, which tips off at 9 p.m., will be televised live on ESPNU.

Davidson’s women’s basketball traveled to Ohio this weekend for a pair of games, but came home empty handed. The Wildcats lost to Xavier, 84-60, on Friday. Then they fell to Cincinnati 60-42 on Sunday. That leaves them with four wins and eight losses so far on the season. After a holiday layoff, they’re back in action Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. against Wofford at Belk Arena. Details on www.davidsonwildcats.com.

Purdue surprised Davidson by jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, and the Wildcats never recovered, losing 76-58 in Indianapolis Saturday afternoon in the John Wooden Tradition game. The Cats have dug themselves deep first-half holes previously this season, but they couldn’t climb out of this one.

As Davidson College’s men’s basketball team heads out of town this weekend for a big TV game against Purdue, star Stephen Curry has reeled in another big honor: 2008 College Athlete of the Year chosen by Sporting News magazine. In an interview in the magazine’s latest issue, due out today (Friday), Curry talks about the challenges of fame and how he thinks this year’s Wildcat team could repeat last year’s tournament run. He also talks about whether he’ll be back next year.
The 22nd ranked Wildcats play No. 13 Purdue at 3:30 Saturday in the 9th annual John Wooden Tradition tournament. The game is scheduled to air on CBS.
