Mike Maloy, an All-American basketball star at Davidson College in the late 1960s who went on to play in the old American Basketball Association and in Europe, has died at the age of 59.
An Austrian Press Agency report published on the newspaper website DiePresse.com says Mr. Maloy died of what is described as a serious case of flu at his home in Vienna, where he worked as a teacher and coach at the American International School.
Mr. Maloy, a New York City native, was one of the first standout African American athletes at Davidson and one of the school’s all-time sports greats. He played at a time when the team was a fixture in post-season NCAA basketball tournaments. He once appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated (see below). And he was on the 1968 and 1969 teams that went to the final 8 of the NCAA tourney, barely losing to the University of North Carolina in both years’ East Regional finals. Davidson basketball guard Stephen Curry has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for his performance in three Wildcat conference wins last week. It’s the seventh time this season he has won the award, which is voted on by the conference’s sports information directors.
Curry’s seventh award marks the most times a player has earned the honor in a season since it was created in 1968. Curry has now earned the accolade 15 times in his career. Read the full story

Cats to host No. 11 Butler
in ESPN game Feb. 21
Davidson will host No. 11 Butler in an ESPN ‘BrackBusters’ game on Feb. 21, the college announced Monday.

Davidson’s men’s basketball team easily defeated Western Carolina Monday night, 89-65. Five Wildcats hit for double figures in the game at Belk Arena, which lifted Davidson to 19-3 on the season, 12-0 in the Southern Conference.
Stephen Curry had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists to lead the Cats, who won their 42nd straight league game. Brendan McKillop, Bryant Barr and Andrew Lovedale had 14 points each, and Max Paulhus Gosselin added 10. Read the full story
