College of Charleston beat Davidson 65-54 in the Southern Conference women’s basketball quarterfinals Saturday morning in Chattanooga.

Guard Alex Thompson scored 21 points for the Wildcats, who came within two points of the Cougars about two-thirds of the way through the second half. But Charleston ran away in the closing minutes to make the semifinals.

The Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) has named Davidson guard Stephen Curry the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in separate balloting announced Thursday, the 12 Southern Conference head coaches also named Mr. Curry as Player of the  Year, and teammate Max Paulhus Gosselin earned the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award in a ballot conducted by the league’s 12 head coaches. Davidson’s community calendar this week includes the 25th Davidson Horticultural Symposium today. Tonight at 7, Town Hall hosts a public forum on “Our Economic Future” with planner Michael Gallis and N.C. Department of Commerce representative Ron Leitch. The Charlotte Writers Club North meets Thursday to hear Sauni Wood. It’s spring break at the college, so events on the Davidson campus have come to a standstill for the week. Davidson’s men’s basketball team beat Elon Monday night, 90-78, with a three-man scoring attack that included 26 points from Stephen Curry, 18 from Bryant Barr and 17 from Steve Rossiter. Read the full story

Junior Stephen Curry became Davidson College’s top scorer of all time Saturday, hitting 34 points to help the Cats beat Georgia Southern at Belk Arena, 99-56. The win also clinched the regular season South Division championship for the Wildcats.

The record was a tasty treat for fans in the final home game of the regular season. The win lifted the Cats to 23-6 overall and 16-2 in the Southern Conference. Curry needed 30 points in the game to beat John Gerdy’s record of 2,483 from 1975 to 1979. At halftime, he had 20 points, and broke the record with a flurry of points early in the second half.
