Matt Matheny, a Davidson College assistant men’s basketball coach for the past 16 seasons, has been named head coach at Elon University. The move had been rumored in recent days, amid speculation that Mr. Matheny was ready to step up to a head coaching job after years at the side of Davidson Coach Bob McKillop.

The announcement came at a press conference this afternoon on the Elon Campus in Elon, N.C., east of Greensboro and northwest of Burlington. Read the full story

Team plans 3-on-3 tournament May 3

Spearheaded by junior guard Bryant Barr, the Davidson men’s basketball team
will host a 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament and auction on May 3, 2-5 p.m., at Belk Arena to raise money for Nothing But Nets, an organization that provides families in Africa with mosquito nets to prevent malaria. Davidson’s All-American basketball standout Stephen Curry said Wednesday he will decide soon whether to enter the National Basketball Association draft or return for his senior year. He told reporters he plans to sit down this weekend with his dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, who will help him consider his options.

Meanwhile, at a press conference on campus, he raised another intriguing prospect: Could brother Seth, who announced this week he’s transferring away from Liberty University, wind up at Davidson? Read the full story

St. Mary’s pulled away in the second half to glide past Davidson, 80-68, in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament in Moraga, Calif., late Monday night. The loss ended the Wildcats’ season at 27-8.

St. Mary’s (28-6) held a 7-point lead with a minute to go and Davidson could only hope to slow the Gaels with fouls as the clock ran down. The win sends the Gaels into a quarterfinal game Wednesday against San Diego State University. Read the full story

This week’s activities in and around Davidson begin with a community update meeting tonight on the ongoing Comprehensive Plan process, and a Wildcats’ basketball game late tonight on the West Coast. The Town Board’s monthly work session is Tuesday night. Both Davidson Community Players (“How I Learned to Drive”) and Davidson College (Stephen Sondheim’s “Company”) have theater productions running. And Davidson Presbyterian Church hosts a community “Inaugural Ball” to celebrate African American history and the election of a black president.

Davidson’s men’s basketball team travels to California today for a second-round game in the National Invitation Tournament against St. Mary’s. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (11:30 p.m. EDT), and the game will air on ESPN2.

The Wildcats, led by the nation’s top scorer Stephen Curry, beat South Carolina 70-63 on March 17 to advance in the NIT. They have a 27-7 record on the season. Read the full story
