Rachel Keener

A pair of book related events are scheduled in Davidson Tuesday night. North Carolina author Rachel Keener will be at Davidson public library branch at 7 p.m. Tuesday to read and discuss her first novel,“The Killing Tree.”

Across the street at Main Street Books, the Main Street Readers monthly book club will discuss “The Help” by Kathryn Stockwell.

Ron Johnson

Davidson Day School has hired Ron Johnson, a former Barry University college player and now an administrator at the University of Georgia, as boys’ basketball coach and Dean of Student Life.

Landry Kosmalski

Landry Kosmalski, a former Wildcat star athlete from the Class of 2000, is the newest member of the Davidson College men’s basketball team coaching staff.

Mr. Kosmalski has helped coach the team before, serving as an assistant from 2004-2006.  He returns to Davidson from a stint as a coach at The Webb School in Knoxville.

Buzzkill, a basketball tournament and auction organized by Davidson College basketball player Bryant Barr, raised $15,000 Sunday to send more than 1,500 insecticide-covered mosquito nets to African families.

The online and silent auction also brought in some hefty prices for Davidson College basketball merchandise, including shoes, shirts, posters and items signed by star Stephen Curry. There was some speculation last week that Mr. Curry’s recent decision to skip senior year and enter the NBA draft might drive up prices in the auction.

Updated Monday, May 4, 2 p.m.

Woodlawn School sophomore Sawyer Bowman won the Day Care Dash 5k through the streets of Davidson on Town Day Saturday, May 2.

Sawyer crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 44 seconds.  Dr. Stephanie Elkins of Davidson, finished 9th overall and was the first woman across the line, in 22:49.

The race brought hundreds of runners to the Village Green early Saturday and kicked off a day of fun at Town Day 2009. The event also raised money for Davidson Cornelius Day Care. Read the full story
