Fall is fund-raiser time for area schools.  We have several to report on, including Woodlawn‘s “Fun at 5,” and the Bailey Middle kids at the farmer’s market.  We also have news below of Davidson Day artwork on display, a meet-and-greet planned for the principal of the new Bailey Road High School, CMS school board election updates and classes being offered through Davidson Parks & Rec for the CMS school holiday next week.

Virginia Tech beat the Davidson College men’s soccer team 1-0 Tuesday night in Blacksburg, Va., when a corner kick glanced off a Wildcat player and into the goal in the final minute of play. Hello sweaters and jackets!  Maybe even turn on the heat!  And be sure to bring in those tender household plants which have enjoyed the summer outside. It is that time of year when we welcome daytime sunshine and almost-freezing nights.  How nice to find a protected spot outside and enjoy the warm rays knowing that we may have to wait months before having this opportunity once again.

Interesting news today about John Hart’s talk to book club members, Bill Giduz’ reception (do you know the children in his promotional postcard?) and a special birthday greeting to Willa Armstrong.  There is also news of a wonderful football honor for a very talented ten-year-old Eliza Robinson. Stephen Curry hit only three baskets in 20 minutes of play Saturday night as his Golden State Warriors lost to the Sacramento Kings, 101-94. The No. 7 pick in the NBA draft is leading his team in assists, with 35 in the first six games of the preseason. One teammate had nothing but praise for Curry’s performance so far as a Warrior:

A goal by Josh Zipin late in the second half lifted Davidson College’s men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Furman Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. On Sunday, the women also beat visiting Furman, on an early second-half goal by senior Kyri Bye-Nagel. Read the full story

Davidson College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off their 2009-10 seasons Friday night with “A Night With the Cats,” a fan rally at Belk Arena with dance performances, a three-point shooting contest and scrimmages.
