Coach Campagna
Wilbert Vincent Campagna of Mooresville, a longtime coach and athletic director at North Mecklenburg and Charlotte Catholic high schools, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. He was 78 years old.

I’m periodically contacted by the ESPN program “Sport Science,” which airs programs on the science behind sports, to give mathematical advice related to developing segments. This past summer and fall, I helped with pieces related to the World Cup and the Home Run Derby. Just over a week ago, I received an email from a producer of the show. Frankly, my heart rate increases simply seeing the email in my Inbox as I know 1) the question will be challenging else their team would have answered it and 2) they will need an answer ASAP or as they often comment, “It’s TV, we needed the answer yesterday.”

Workers laid down the artificial turf at Richardson Stadium last week. (David Boraks/DavidsonNews.net)
After weeks of preparation, workers last week laid down artificial turf on the formerly grass field at Davidson College’s Richardson Stadium. The new turf will allow the college to expand use of the stadium, to include football practice, lacrosse and intramural games, and other outdoor events. The renovation was funded with a gift from the Armfield Foundation.

Davidson’s men’s and women’s basketball teams came away with wins in games Monday night.
In Statesboro, Ga., last night, JP Kuhlman led all scorers with 20 points as Davidson’s men beat Georgia Southern, 73-66.
At Belk Arena, the women surprised Elon, 69-65, with the help of 18 points from Sophia Aleksandravicius.
