CHARLOTTE - Hough High’s Huskies are through to the 4A state championship game, following a tight 1-0 overtime win at Myers Park Tuesday. Today in Sports, an essay by Davidson College alum Gabrielle Wallace about how the Davidson College network is alive and well, even on the other side of the continent. She tells a story of pulling Wildcat strings to get tickets so that she and her sick father could see former Wildcat Stephen Curry and his NBA Golden State Warriors play in Portland in April. “Dad was elated to meet Stephen and, though I had to support his weight as we walked slowly up the stairs and out of the arena, he claimed he was so happy he felt he was floating on air,” she writes. More than 700 runners joined in for the Run Wild 5K and Wild Child Fun Run in Huntersville’s Birkdale neighborhood Saturday, raising $30,000 for the African Children’s Project. Davidson-based Olympian Anthony Famiglietti won the race in one of the fastest 5K times in the area in recent memory. Claire Naisby of Davidson won the women’s division. Davidson College officials confirmed Wednesday what has been rumored for weeks, that most Wildcats’ sports teams will leave the Southern Conference for the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10), beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year. Andrew Wilkins has a report from Wednesday morning’s announcement.

Glen Thompson easily won the third annual Miles for Marnie 5K on Saturday on the greenway in Davidson. A total of 245 runners completed the race. The event, and a separate fun run, helped raise money for the Marnie Jude Foundation, founded in honor of local cancer patient Marnie Howiler.
