The DES mascot handed out high fives at last year's Prowl kickoff.

Most of us associate a marathon with 26.2 miles.  At Davidson Elementary, the race is tied to a much bigger number – 156 laps, which would be the number of times students must run around the school track to earn a cool t-shirt award and the posting of their names in the school’s prestigious front hallway list of marathoners.

The Tigers on the Prowl program, developed seven years ago by the school’s P.E. teacher Walter Rabb and past PTA president Lynn Hennighausen, will hold its annual kickoff next week.

Construction work was underway Tuesday morning on the front entrance to the new high school on Bailey Road.

What should be the new name for the high school currently under construction on Bailey Road in Cornelius?  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are seeking input on what to name the building, and also offering the public a chance to learn more about construction progress and to check out the school’s attendance maps. Principal Terri Cockerham is holding two drop-in info sessions this month about the high school.

Katelyn Labrijn accepts a donation from a parent in the car line Friday at Community School of Davidson.

You can almost see the word “Thank you” forming on the lips of Katelyn Labrijn in the photo at right as she accepts a donation to the Davidson-Cornelius Day Care Center.  Katelyn was one of several students who worked the Community School of Davidson car line Friday afternoon to raise money for the day care, which is reeling from a financial crisis.  Katelyn isn’t the only one saying thank you – the center board president was also full of thanks as she watched the students collecting cash.
