The town of Davidson soon will begin replacing the aging pedestrian walkway along Griffith Street at Roosevelt Wilson Park in a $76,000 project paid for through a combination of town funds and a grant from the charitable foundation of Mooresville-based Lowe’s Corp.

The town announced Tuesday that Lowe’s Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has provide a grant of $25,000 to help pay for the bridge. The town also has $51,000 for the project in its 2012-2013 budget. Read the full story

When Exit 28 in Cornelius is rebuilt next year to improve traffic flow, the interchange also will get a big aesthetic makeover, too. Architects for the town unveiled a nautical-themed design this week that calls for decorative bridge abutments, lighting and a signature mast-and-cable feature that looks like a sailboat. Did you put your trash and recycling out Wednesday morning? This week is the last under the town’s current schedule. We’re all getting new trash and recycling bins and the pickup schedule will changebeginning Oct. 1.

Contractor Republic Waste Services has been collecting our old garbage carts, and hauling them to a temporary trash can graveyard on Bradford Park Drive, off Robert Walker Drive in the Bailey Springs neighborhood. Thousands of the old brown, blue and green trash bins are stacked high awaiting removal. Meanwhile, a supply of new red recycling carts and black trash carts is awaiting delivery. Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation are down to the last few punch list items on its summer repaving project on N.C. 115. This week, they’ve been re-building the popular decorative crosswalks on Main Street, beginning on North Main Street and working their way south. Read the full story

Davidson’s Town Board has a pair of meetings this week – its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night and a quarterly retreat Thursday and Friday in Asheville. Tuesday’s meeting will include a discussion and possible vote on Piedmont Natural Gas’s request for a gas line easement through Fisher Farm, of Shearer’s Road in northeast Davidson.

Commissioners Tuesday also will continue discussion of a 5-year capital improvement plan for town. The meeting is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson. See the agenda and related documents on the town website. Read the full story

Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday began work on a new Capital Improvement Plan – a wish list of proposed town projects, ranging from a badly needed $3 million fire station in east Davidson to street and sidewalk improvements. At their monthly work session, commissioners also approved refinancing $1.6 million in debt, and they looked askance at their counterparts in Cornelius, who rejected joining a regional planning initiative called CONNECT earlier this month. Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities sent a crew to Kimberly Road in Davidson Tuesday night to examine the severity of what residents there called a “sinkhole.” The damage happened after a water line under the road leaked for several days. Read the full story
