The Lake Norman Chamber says the N.C. Department of Transportation must consider all options, including a public-private partnership and toll lanes, as it plans for the widening of I-77 widening north of Charlotte. Davidson public works is re-striping the parking spaces on Main Street from Griffith Street south to Eugenia Street this week. As work began Wednesday, the street became a lineup of orange cones – and no vehicles. Read the full story

Davidson commissioners began discussing the town’s 2013-2014 budget at their monthly work session Tuesday at Town Hall, focusing on potential employee raises and new positions for the public works and planning departments. We celebrate lots of innovations and traditions here in Davidson, and this week has certainly brought some unique firsts: New crosswalk safety flags on Griffith Street and new trash and recycling cans on Main Street.

That’s right: We had a dedication for new trash cans. Turns out that project has been in the works for a few years, since being proposed by a group of Community School of Davidson students. Meanwhile, the new crosswalk flags also came out of a project at the school.

Flashing pedestrian crossing lights will be installed at the Griffith Street roundabouts and lighting could be improved at crosswalks near the Davidson College campus in the coming months, officials announced at the Town Board work session Tuesday night. Commissioners also raised concerns over a General Assembly bill that could limit towns’ abilities to enforce residential design standards.

In other news, work has begun to transform the old pump station on South Street into offices for Parks & Recreation. And the town’s finance director says sales tax revenues are continuing to rebound to pre-2008 levels. Read the full story
