A dump truck that clipped a power line caused sections of Davidson-Concord Road to be closed late Thursday afternoon and caused some brief power outages.  The accident occured near the intersection with Kimberly Road in the McConnell neighborhood. According to a notice put out at 5:58 p.m. by the Town of Davidson, “a utility pole was hit by a truck and is swaying in the wind.” The utility pole is now down, but drivers and pedestrians were warned to avoid the area “due to possible live wires.”  Read the full story

Traffic lights are now operating at Griffith and Beaty streets.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has turned on traffic signals at the intersection of Sloan, Beaty and Griffith streets. For now, the lights will operate on a timer, Davidson public works director Doug Wright said Wednesday.

The signal had been installed in late July and was supposed to have been operational by mid-August. But it was held up by a delay in striping the stop lines and lanes at the intersection, Mr. Wright said. Read the full story

Traffic signals will be turned on Aug. 11 at Griffith and Beaty streets.

A long-awaited traffic light has been installed on Griffith Street at Beaty Street, and will be turned on Aug. 11. The light will flash yellow for a week for testing, and go into regular signal opration on Aug. 18, town officials said this week.

Meanwhile, the town also has installed three-way stop signs at the intersection of Woodland and Ridgewood. The signs were among a series of traffic-calming measures approved by the town board in March. Read the full story

A town-commissioned telephone survey in Davidson beginning this week will gather residents’ views on local issues including priorities for a variety of potential town projects. The Charlotte-based firm MarketWise will conduct a random survey of 300 households. The calls, which take about 10 minutes, will begin this week and continue for two to three weeks. An upgrade of the campus-wide heating and cooling system is opening up trenches and creating mounds of dirt at Davidson College this summer. The work is adding two of the college’s oldest buildings – Philanthropic Hall and Eumenean Hall – to the campus-wide heating and cooling system.

Until now, these two historic structures were cooled and heated by individual units at each building, according to college officials. The new system will feed heat and chilled water for cooling to each building underground.

The steam is generated at the college steam plant adjoining the laundry, and the chilled water is generated in the Robert Collins Chiller Plant located beside the Stowe Tennis House. College officials say the central service is more energy efficient, and will eliminate the noisy individual units.

The Town Board’s final meeting of the 2007-2008 fiscal year is scheduled Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 216 South Main St. The board is expected to approve the 2008-2009 budget, hold a public hearing on proposed rezoning along the Davidson-Concord Road / N.C. 73 corridor, and continue its discussion of the proposed Davidson IB Middle School-Community Center project.
