CORNELIUS – Bailey Middle School was briefly put on lockdown late Friday morning while police from Cornelius and Huntersville searched for a man who lived in the area who reportedly was threatening to harm himself.

The lockdown was brief, and the man eventually was located unharmed in Huntersville, near N.C. 73 and Mayes Road. He was hospitalized, according to Huntersville police.

Parents of Bailey Middle students were alerted about the lockdown Friday afternoon in a automated telephone call from the school.

This week, firefighters assisted homeowners with fire alarm activations caused by burned food on a stove and a malfunctioning carbon monoxide detector. Police obtained a search warrant and broke up a teen drinking party Saturday night in the River Run neighborhood. Alcoholic beverages were seized and a 17-year-old woman is now facing misdemeanor charges of aiding and abetting underage drinking, along with resisting, obstructing, and delaying.  Four other partygoers also were cited for underage drinking and resisting, obstructing, and delaying. Elsewhere, five drivers were charged with DWI on local streets over the past two weeks, and a Davidson Pointe resident reported that someone shot a BB through a side window of the home. A 26-year-old Charlotte woman who lost an arm after a boat backed over her during a party on Lake Norman in June has sued the boat’s operator, owner and manufacturer. Deondra Scott is seeking unspecified damages of more than $10,000 in the suit, which was filed this month at Mecklenburg Superior Court. Read the full story

This week, firefighters and a Medic ambulance assisted Davidson police with a minor accident in which a school bus sideswiped an SUV. No one was injured, but firefighters inspected both vehicles to ensure that no hazardous fluids were leaking. Elsewhere, a condominium on Harper Lee Street was found to have slightly elevated carbon monoxide levels, but emergency personnel were unable to locate the source. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are investigating a man’s death Sunday at a home on East Rocky River Road. Few details were available Sunday afternoon, but police said there does not appear to be foul play.

Davidson firefighters assisted emergency personnel in Cornelius with a number of calls this week, including a kitchen fire on Torrence Chapel Road that produced heavy smoke that could be seen outside of the residence. Davidson units also came across an accident on I-77 at Exit 30  involving five vehicles while responding to assist Cornelius firefighters with an accident at Exit 28. No one was injured in the Exit 30 accident, and firefighters quickly cleared the scene after helping a state highway patrol officer manage the vehicles along the roadway. Six vehicle break-ins were reported Jan. 4 and 5, near Virginia Road and Winged Oak Way. Windows were busted out of vehicles in at least four of the incidents, but the only items reported stolen were $90 worth of clothing and electronics in one case, and $3 cash in another. Meanwhile, $100 worth of athletic clothing was stolen from the Lake Norman Christian School on South Street in a break-in the first Tuesday of the year. Police also are investigating an embezzlement at The Brickhouse Tavern in which an employee reportedly stole $271 from the restaurant.
