Residents, family and friends
have offered messages of support over the past 24 hours for Davidson community services officer Kenn Latzer, who was suspended with pay last month after an incident involving the death of a cat. And TV stations, which Thursday night played up the story’s animal cruelty angle, switched gears this morning and were working on stories featuring interviews with Mr. Latzer’s supporters.

The Davidson Police Department has suspended its community services officer indefinitely while he faces a misdemeanor charge related to death of a cat. Kenn Latzer said the incident was “an accident” and he’s “in shock” about the suspension.

Students and parents walk along South Street on the way to Davidson Elementary School Wednesday morning in the first of a planned series of Walking Wednesdays sponsored by the school and the DavidsonWalks committee. A total of 367 walked and biked during the event, arriving at the school for drinks, snacks and free backpack tags which will help track their participating in the monthly Walking Wednesday events.

After Labor Day, the starting gate opens for a busy fall in Davidson, beginning with parent-teacher meetings at local schools, the first in a series of school Walking Wednesdays, the opening of a Davidson College faculty art exhibit, and a visit by Chicago’s renowned comedy troupe The Second City.

Davidson Elementary School students and their parents are being encouraged this fall to make walking or biking an alternative way to get to school. School officials and the town-sponsored DavidsonWalks citizen committee are sponsoring a series of “Walking Wednesdays” beginning this Wednesday, Sept. 5, to promote the idea.

A woman jogging along the Greenway between Hudson Place and Davidson-Concord Road told police she encountered a man with his pants down around noon Wednesday.

The opening of the South Street extension into Cornelius will have little immediate effect on automobile drop-off and pick-up procedures when Davidson Elementary School opens Monday, Aug. 27, though school officials and police say they’ll monitor the situation to see if changes are needed.
