A fire that may have started with candles left burning destroyed a home on Brinkley Street in old Cornelius early Sunday. The house at 21117 Brinkley Street, a couple of blocks off Catawba Avenue, was completely in flames when firefighters arrived just after 6 a.m. Story and photos on CorneliusNews.net.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to a Charlotte hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Friday night after a four-vehicle accident at rush hour on I-77 southbound near Exit 30. The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. on the causeway across Lake Norman north of Davidson Exit 30. Read the full story

Mooresville police this week arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the Feb. 3 robbery of a First Citizens Bank off I-77 Exit 33. In Davidson, police arrested a woman on Griffith Street on a DWI charge after she admitted to driving the right side of the road and smashing into a light pole while texting. An unknown suspect passed two counterfeit $20 bills at the Rushco Oil station, and a known suspect is under investigation for stealing $1,600 worth of jewelry from a Northwest Drive residence. This week, Davidson firefighters assisted Iredell County and Cornelius emergency responders with motor vehicle collisions on I-77, and checked on a malfunctioning smoke detector at a Davidson College eating house. Firefighters also provided first responder services on 11 EMS calls and stood by at a Davidson College men’s basketball game. Wrecks on both sides of I-77 through Cornelius and Davidson were backing up traffic Thursday afternoon.
The first accident happened around 1:40 p.m. A Medic unit responded along with firefighters to the wreck in the southbound lanes, just north of Exit 28/Catawba Avenue. Traffic was backed up for about five miles, to around Exit 33. NC DOT reported that congestion could remain through about 4:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, a second wreck was reported just before 3 p.m. on I-77 northbound, just before Exit 30. One person reportedly was hurt in that incident. NC DOT reported that the accident could slow traffic through at least 4:30.
No further information about the wrecks was immediately available.

News reports late Monday afternoon said one person was wounded in a shooting outside Northlake Mall, in north Charlotte. WCNC-TV reported the man’s injuries were not life-threatening. WBTV said the shooting was a drive-by.

Police are investigating two instances of intimidation this week, including one case in which a 52-year-old woman reported that a 46-year-old man has been stalking her in person and via text messages/email since December. Elsewhere, a 55-year-old man was charged with trying to pass a forged check for $978 at Aquesta Bank, and a Davidson Gateway Drive resident’s vehicle window was busted out by an unknown suspect on Tuesday.
