Davidson and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police searched an area of east Davidson near N.C. 73 Wednesday night for a young man who called police and was threatening to hurt himself. The man was unarmed, but police were warning residents to be wary and not to respond to unexpected knocks at the door.

Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday agreed to reopen discussions about amending the town charter to lengthen the terms of the mayor and commissioners from the current two years to four, and stagger commissioners’ terms. Board members also appeared in consensus that voters should decide the change in a referendum this November.

Also at the board’s monthly work session, Police Chief Jeanne Miller outlined a proposed overhaul of the town animal control ordinance. Davidson has not reviewed the full ordinance since 1978, and it needs significant rewriting, Chief Miller said. Changes would seek to boost enforcement, improve an appeals process, and possibly ban tethering – tying dogs to fixed chains or ropes – a practice animal activists consider inhumane. The issue likely will come up for further discussion later this spring or summer. Read the full story

I’ve been pretty outspoken about pedestrian safety in Davidson over the past few months. (See Dec. 26, 2011, “Pedestrian safety, through the eyes of an obssessive walker”) But I want to report that I’m finding pedestrian safety along Griffith St., between Watson St. and the new convenience store/gas station, is surprisingly safe. I have been walking from Armour St. (along Watson) and crossing Griffith, heading toward Snap Fitness, for three months now and have never had a close call. Read the full story

Davidson police are investigating the death of a 62-year-old Pfeiffer University professor, who apparently was overcome by carbon monoxide at his town home on Harbour Place Drive Monday. Ray Harrington’s death has shaken the Pfeiffer University campus, where a memorial service was planned Wednesday morning. Read the full story

Lightning struck a Lake Norman waterfront home in Cornelius’s Peninsula neighborhood just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, sparking a fire that spread to the master bedroom and back of the house. Firefighters from Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville responded. Read the full story on CorneliusNews.net.

A man whose body was found on the shore of Lake Norman in southern Iredell County on Sunday apparently fell overboard while fishing. But it’s still not clear what caused his death, investigators said Monday.

Officer Ron Robertson of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, which has jurisdiction on the lake, identified the man as Mitchell Todd Meadows, 50, of Mooresville. Read the full story
