About a month ago, state and local police targeted the Exit 30 area of Davidson for a crackdown on criminal activity related to alcohol and drug use by motorists. The operation lasted four hours, and resulted in 49 arrests. Some citizens applauded the success of the effort while others expressed concerns that Davidson had become a “police state” overnight.
The framers of the Bill of Rights recognized the tension between the right of individuals to be free from government interference and the need for collective security. That is why they wrote the Fourth Amendment to protect the “right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures” and to prohibit warrants from being issued without “probable cause.” The interpretation of the Fourth Amendment has a profound effect on our ability to live as free people in an increasingly complex and crowded world. Davidson police had an unusually busy week, responding to a bank robbery on Main Street and wreck on Shearers Road that caused a power outage in part of town. Thieves stole $1,200 worth of copper tubing from a construction site, and several Torrence Circle residents reported being assaulted by someone they know. Davidson police provided new security camera photos Tuesday that show a skinny and bearded man in the act of robbing the Fifth Third Bank on Main Street at midday Monday. They’re hoping the photos will help as they continue to look for witnesses or anyone who can identify the man.
The new photos are in color, from both the Fifth Third Bank and from another business nearby. They show the man, in a baseball cap and sunglasses, at the moment he is robbing the bank, and then as he ran up Main Street past the front window of the Soda Shop.

MOORESVILLE – People who rent boats on Lake Norman won’t face any new mandatory education requirements, but rental companies have agreed to adopt a series of voluntary “best practices” for boater education, which they say will improve safety on the lake. The Lake Norman Marine Commission announced Monday that the best practices will include boat-safety videos and improved explanations of emergency equipment and lake rules. Read the full story

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that no permits had been issued for excavation at a pit in Stanley where two children died Sunday night. The department also said it seized firearms and a marijuana plant from the home of the man who was using a backhoe to dig at the site. Read the full story

Davidson firefighters assisted local departments with emergencies over the past week, including a structure fire in Mount Mourne and an odor of smoke inside a Cornelius home. A vehicle overturned on N.C. 73 during a rainstorm last Thursday, damaging a utility pole. No injuries were reported.
