A driver lost control of his car and struck a telephone pole on Concord Road around 11:35 a.m. on Monday. A woman passenger appeared to have minor injuries after the crash, which closed the town’s main east-west street for a while. Read the full story

Firefighters assisted homeowners with a number of household problems this week. A woman on Cotton Gin Alley called 911 after waking up early Sunday to the smell of electrical smoke, but firefighters were unable to detect smoke or any other hazards upon investigating. A malfunctioning residential fire alarm on Rollingdale Lane prompted an emergency response last Friday, and a homeowner on Callaway Hills Lane requested assistance for an oven broiler that would not turn off. Someone has hung a Christmas wreath on a telephone pole at the Concord Road crosswalk where Davidson College Professor Rob Whitton was struck by a car the night of Nov. 3. This week, the town began the first of a series of planned improvements prompted by the fatal incident, installing new warning signs in the middle of the road at Faculty Drive and three other crossings. Meanwhile, improved lighting also is in the works for Concord Road, town officials said. Read the full story

A 61-year-old Mooresville man who worked at the Rushco Davidson Market was arrested Wednesday on charges of embezzling an undisclosed amount of cash during numerous transactions at the convenience store. Meanwhile, a Pine Road mother stopped by the police station to report that her 14-year-old son had run away from home. And an official from the Lake Norman Christian School also reported than unknown suspects broke into the school sometime last weekend. Firefighters responded to a possible structure fire on Friday morning in a North Main Street condominium on the Davidson College campus. Firefighters found a pot of burning oil on the condo’s porch upon investigating, and the resident told responders that the oil caught fire while he was cooking. Firefighters helped clear the building of smoke, then advised the resident not to use the stove until it could be inspected. The burning oil on the porch was extinguished by placing a lid on the pot.
In addition, firefighters responded to a number of vehicle accidents and assisted Cornelius emergency personnel with fire alarm activations, including one at the Days Inn Lake Norman. Meanwhile, Santa Claus made his annual tour of Davidson on Engine 4, and a total of 17 medical calls prompted emergency responses. Read the full story

Police are investigating a case of aggravated assault in which a 42 year old man reportedly assaulted a 28-year-old disabled man on Westside Terrace. Officers also received word this week that a Christmas wreath was stolen from a Concord Road resident’s front door, and a Mazda 3 parked on Davidson Gateway Drive was vandalized.
