Police are investigating a string of vehicle break-ins early Friday, June 29. Officers received reports on Pine Road beginning around 7:35 a.m. and continued near Woodland Street and Lorimer Road in the hours that followed. Also this week, a 23-year-old woman reported losing almost $4,000 worth of camera equipment, and police met with the mother of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted. Firefighters stayed busy with malfunctioning and overheating appliances this week, including an air-conditioning unit whose motor burned out and a washing machine that leaked into a residence’s fire alarm system. PSNC Energy workers were called after construction personnel ruptured a 3/4-inch natural gas line on the Davidson College campus, and a light pole near the Chambers Building ignited the surrounding vegetation after it became too hot. A few drops of rain interrupted Davidson’s Independence Day celebration, but the weather couldn’t stop the event on the Village Green Sunday night. The night began with a short parade of about 75 patriotically attired residents waving flags, marching and riding decorated bicycles from McEver Fields up South Street to the Green. Police received a report last week that an unknown suspect pulled over a woman and demanded her driver’s license while impersonating a police officer. The Harris Teeter grocery reported someone stole $480 worth of lawn furniture. And a dead limb caused $500 worth of damage to a Virginia woman’s car when it fell from a tree that was hanging over North Thompson Street. Read the full story

Davidson police are investigating a series of vehicle break-ins on or near Concord Road in the old part of town Monday morning. Police sent out an citizen alert about the break-ins, reminding residents to lock their cars overnight. Police also got reports over the past week about the theft of two vehicles owned by Cooke Rentals from Abersham Park, about a house break-in on Hillside Drive, and about the use of a stolen credit card to buy lottery tickets at Rushco Davidson Market, off I-77 Exit 30. Firefighters chased a variety of fire alarms and carbon monoxide detector activations over the past week, but no hazards were found. Police reported an auto wreck after finding a vehicle off East Rocky River Road in some trees, but emergency crews were canceled after it was determined the accident occurred overnight and nobody was hurt.
