A motorcycle valued at $3,500 was stolen Monday afternoon from a home on Lake Park Drive, in the Exit 30 area. Meanwhile, residents in the South & Walnut and McConnell neighborhoods have told DavidsonNews.net about automobile break-ins over the past week or two. A homebuilder told police April 8 that a large Toshiba flat-screen TV and other electronic equipment and appliances were stolen from a home under construction in the 18000 block of Davidson-Concord Road. Total value of the items was put at $4,500.

Break-ins and property damage also were reported at several other locations last week, including Davidson IB Middle School and the Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street. Read the full story

Construction work on the Stowe Building, a mixed-use project downtown, will require the closing of South Street between Main and Cathey streets on Friday, April 10, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. That’s the section of South Street that runs past Davidson IB Middle School.

An advisory from Police Chief Jeanne Miller says the closure is needed because of “a special stage of construction” that involves pouring concrete floors at the building. Read the full story

Census workers use hand-held GPS computers to update address lists. (Census Bureau photo)

If you see strange people with electronic equipment around town, or even on the front steps in the coming days, it may not be a sign of some sinister plot. Town officials say it’s likely to be workers for the U.S. Census Bureau laying the groundwork for the 2010 population count. The bureau says it’s using the equipment to update its address list for the 130 million U.S. housing units this spring.

A 20-year-old Davidson woman has been identified as the victim in a Sunday night collision with a speeding police car in Charlotte, according to Charlotte news reports. Shatona Evette Robinson of Davidson died in a crash with a police car driven by Officer Martray Proctor, according to newspaper and TV reports. Read the full story
