The Creole House on Main in Cornelius officially closed Monday after a controversial year. The closing came after a series of disputes with local officials over code- and zoning-related issues and after the owner’s January arrest on drug-related charges. Firefighters helped two people trapped in an elevator at the Chambers building on Davidson College campus Friday. And a neighbor’s complaint prompted firefighters to order a Pine Road resident to put out a wood fire in a barrel behind his house. Elsewhere, Engine 3 provided traffic control for a motor vehicle collision March 10 at the bottom of the Exit 30 Southbound ramp, and routine fire alarms rounded out the rest of the week’s fire calls. Davidson police arrested two Mooresville residents Friday on  possession of heroin and other drug-related charges after a traffic stop apartment on Davidson Gateway Drive. Police also are a investigating case of fraud in which a local woman reported someone stole her personal information off a workplace computer and then used her identity to purchase items at a Georgia department store. The N.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear arguments in a case that seeks to invalidate the powers of Davidson College’s campus police department on the grounds that Davidson is a religious institution.

The case State vs. Yencer is first on the docket Tuesday. The oral arguments are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the N.C. Supreme Court in Raleigh. Read the full story

Firefighters responded to two addresses multiple times this week for smoke detector activations. A Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal ordered a fire watch in the pool area of Homewood Suites after a smoke detector sounded three times Saturday. Meanwhile, an unattended hot griddle set off a smoke detector twice in recent days at the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Davidson College. Firefighters also were called to the college’s Watson Life Science Building when a big release of steam in a malfunctioning heating/air conditioning unit activated a fire alarm. A Davidson woman was charged with driving while intoxicated on Sunday after driving her Jeep the wrong direction around the Davidson-Concord Road traffic circle and losing control. Police also received a call from a woman concerned that her daughter and grandson may have been missing from an address at which a suspect had been arrested for assaulting a female and communicating threats three days prior. Firefighters helped paramedics on the scene of two-car collision that injured one person last Friday on N.C. 73 near the Summer’s Walk neighborhood.  A child pulled a fire alarm at the Community School of Davidson, prompting a big response from local emergency personnel. A smoking oven in a residence hall at Davidson College forced firefighters to ventilate the first floor of the building, and false alarms at a townhouse and the Davidson College Information Technology office rounded out the week’s calls.
