Officers received a variety of theft reports this week. Two adolescent males were caught breaking into Davidson Elementary School on Saturday evening, and a woman reported that her wallet had been stolen while she shopped on Main Street. Other reported thefts included a piece of jewelry valued at $600 that was stolen from a victim at Davidson Day School and a bicycle taken from Lakeview Drive. Firefighters responded to a number of fire alarm activations over the past week, as well as two calls to the Davidson College campus where passersby incorrectly reported seeing smoke. Meanwhile, a guest at Homewood Suites raised concerns among hotel staff when they smelled something burning in his room. Upon investigating, firefighters found that the burning smell was coming from the guest’s microwave, in which he was attempting to dry a shirt. Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed into law a bill that puts local government email address lists off-limits to businesses and the public. The new law could alleviate  concerns prompted in January when The Charlotte Observer filed public-records requests with Cornelius, Davidson, Mecklenburg County and other local governments for the email addresses of citizens who subscribe to government email lists. Police charged a 53-year-old Cornelius man with driving while his license was revoked after he hit a utility poll and flipped his Chrysler PT Cruiser on Potts Street last Friday. The man fled the scene, and his wife told police later that he takes medication and has seizures, though it wasn’t clear if that was the cause of Friday’s crash. A Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce session last Friday was billed as a debate over a controversial bill in the N.C. General Assembly to let drivers keep firearms in their cars in private parking lots. Potts Street in Davidson was closed because of low-hanging utility lines Friday afternoon around 3:30 after a car struck a utility pole and overturned. Police and a witness told DavidsonNews.net that occupants got out of the car and fled the scene. Read the full story

Police are investigating an incident of vandalism at The Davidson Cotton Mill in which an unknown suspect caused an estimated $5,000 worth of damage to the interior and exterior of the business overnight Tuesday. Meanwhile, officers also investigated a car theft in River Run, and responded to two instances of domestic assault, including one in which a man allegedly pepper sprayed his son in self-defense.
