With a loud crack that “sounded like fireworks,” a large tree limb broke and fell onto Concord Road Tuesday night, striking a parked car and briefly slowing traffic. Workers quickly cleared debris, but on Wednesday morning the limb remained where it had fallen, punched through the rear window of a rented silver Toyota. Read the full story

MOORESVILLE – The Lake Norman Marine Commission could get its first look next month at a draft of new rules to improve safety among those who rent boats on the lake. But it’s not yet clear how far the rules might go.
The commission decided last month to study requiring certification or licenses for boat renters. That followed a June 25 accident in Mooresville in which a rental boat driver backed over and seriously injured a 25-year-old Charlotte woman.
Commission officials said at their meeting Monday night at Charles Mack Citizens Center that they believe the commission has the authority to adopt new requirements. Read the full story

The third annual Barnstock music festival – two nights of live local bands on the Brown family farm off N.C. 73 – raised $6,500 for Davidson Volunteer Fire Department over the weekend.
The event attracted 169 people Friday night for an “Old Folks Barnstock” with several local bands and an older crowd. Another 684 music lovers showed up Saturday for the main Barnstock event, a 15-and-over show that featured five different local bands. Read the full story

Lightning struck a transformer and knocked down power lines behind Sadler Square shopping center Friday afternoon. The power surge apparently sparked a fire in a
piece of dry-cleaning equipment at Custom Cleaners. Meanwhile, firefighters helped salvage two Jetton Street apartments Thursday morning after finding water flowing from an apartment with the front door locked and nobody around. And Cornelius firefighters helped Davidson units extinguish a small fire in the basement of Davidson College’s Martin Science Building on July 28 that started in a box fan.

More than 550 people attended last year's Barnstock, at the Brown farm. Organizer Miles Brown thinks there could be 750 this year.
Wow, what a weekend we have ahead for local music, from two nights of music at Barnstock on the Brown farm in Huntersville to outdoor concerts Saturday in Cornelius and Sunday in Davidson. And 
there’s a lot more in between.
It’s the third year for Barnstock, so named because it’s in and out of the Brown family’s barn on Black Farms Road, off N.C. 73 in Huntersville. This year, Barnstock is expanding to two nights: Beside Saturday’s lineup of five bands of teens and 20-somethings, they’ve added a Friday night concert they’re calling “Old Folks Barnstock” – for the over-21 crowd.
