Firefighters assisted Mecklenburg County Medic with injured passengers involved in two motor vehicle collisions this week. One happened on Shearer Road when a driver accidentally drove down an embankment into a grove of trees. The other involved a Davidson College Campus Police at the intersection of North Main Street and Ridge Road. In addition to these incidents, emergency personnel also investigated a vehicle fire on I-77 that turned out to be an overheated wheel bearing on a pickup truck trailer. At Tuesday’s Davidson Town Board meeting, North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers recognized Nick Lyssikatos as Citizen of the Year.

Mr. Lyssikatos, the proprietor of the Brickhouse Tavern in Davidson, was honored for his support of the Davidson police department, including an annual contribution of food to the town’s National Night Out observance in August. Read the full story

A Davidson College campus police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries Wednesday morning after his cruiser collided with another vehicle on N.C. 115/North Main Street north of downtown.  N.C. 115 was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes after the crash. Read the full story

Erin Cobb, the 28-year-old woman shot by her ex-husband outside her east Davidson home Sept. 24, is recovering and in physical therapy at a hospital in Charlotte. Meanwhile, her Charlotte banking coworkers have organized a happy hour Wednesday afternoon at a Charlotte pub to help raise money for her expenses. Read the full story

HUNTERSVILLE – A 9-year-old boy died in a house fire early Monday morning after firefighters tried unsuccessfully to rescue him from the burning house.

Around 2:15 a.m. Monday, Huntersville Police responded to the house fire, at 13915 Holbrooks Road, and found the home fully engulfed in flames, according to the police report.

As Huntersville Firefighters worked to gain control of the fire, officers spoke with a woman who had been pulled from the house through a bedroom window by a neighbor. She told them her 9-year-old son was still in the house. Read the full story

New details surfaced this week regarding the Sept. 26 motor vehicle collision on Concord Road in which a Pineville man’s Honda rolled over. A Davidson Police Department report states that the Honda was traveling at approximately 40 mph, and witnesses said the driver may have been unconscious from a medical incident at the time of the collision.

The Honda’s front driver side wheel dug into the asphalt following the collision and caused the vehicle to flip, rear over front. Firefighters responded to several calls on the Davidson College campus this week, including a smoke alarm triggered by a fog machine inside a fraternity house, burned food in dormitories and other Greek houses. Engine 1 stayed busy this week, managing an electrical hazard on June Washam Road and a ruptured water pipe on Southwest Drive.
