Firefighters responded to a several alarm malfunctions over the past week, as well as an oven fire on Pine Road and a two-vehicle collision on I-77. Emergency workers helped clear a large tree limb that was blocking North Main Street, and a kitten was rescued from a storm drain on Kiser Corner Lane in Summer’s Walk. Firefighters struggled to contain a large outside fire May 6 that started in a collection of about 80 large hay bales of East Rocky River Road. Nearby fire companies all provided firefighters and water-supply vehicles. Also over the past week, firefighters removed four Davidson College students from a stalled elevator and helped police search for the 11-year-old boy who went missing. One or possibly two cars were involved in a minor wreck just north of the Griffith Street bridge over I-77 around 11:15 Thursday morning (David Boraks/DavidsonNews.net)
A pair of wrecks on I-77 northbound on either side of Exit 30 was slowing traffic around midday Thursday. Neither accident appeared serious. Read the full story

An 18-year-old man was flown by medical helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center-Main on Monday night after receiving a head injury while skateboarding. The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in a cul-de-sac near the Abersham park area, where the man was reportedly “longboarding” with friends.
Three Davidson fire engines carrying a total of eleven volunteers responded to the scene to assist the patient, along with a Medic ambulance and three Davidson police officers. Firefighters assisted with preparing a landing zone for the helicopter nearby. No further details were immediately available. CORNELIUS - A faulty lamp is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a lakefront house on Norman Shores Drive in Cornelus early Saturday. Nobody was hurt in the pre-sunrise blaze that burned more than half of the house and caused significant smoke damage to the rest. See the full story on CorneliusNews.net.

Firefighters responded to a several wrecks this week, including one incident at North Main and Beaty streets Monday night that brought injuries, and one on I-77 in which no one was injured. Engine 1 responded to a motorcycle wreck on Catawba Avenue as well, but the driver of the motorcycle left the scene before emergency units arrived. Construction dust at homes on Charden Road and Pine Road triggered smoke detectors that prompted responses from firefighters, as well. Firefighters last week responded to a report of a gasoline leak at the marina on Portside Drive in Davidson Landing. Employees at Archer’s Towing called 911 when a vehicle began to smoke after its battery arced in a storage area, and the Mecklenburg County fire marshal’s office was called to investigate an illegal outdoor fire on Shearer Street. Firefighters over the past week investigated several natural gas emergencies. Emergency personnel helped PSNC Energy technicians clamp off a ruptured natural gas line on Walnut Street last Friday and investigated an odor of natural gas on St. Alban’s Lane Tuesday. On Thursday, Davidson units provided standby coverage for Cornelius firefighters while they responded to another gas leak, in the Heritage Green neighborhood. On Tuesday, one patient was take to the hospital after a two vehicle collision on I-77 north of Davidson, and steam from a shower triggered a smoke alarm in Davidson College’s Tomlinson Dormitory.
