The Mecklenburg County Commission is scheduled to vote Tuesday night whether to cap the tax rate on proposed new fire tax districts in the unincorporated areas of the county. A resolution on the agenda at Tuesday’s meeting also would schedule an April 3 public hearing on the plan. As the region continues to grow, the county has been discussing changing the way fire service is paid for in areas beyond the town limits in Davidson, Cornelius and other county municipalities. Davidson firefighters over the past week helped Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department with a major accident on I-77 and assisted Cornelius and Huntersville units at an early morning house fire on Brinkley Street. Other calls included a smoke alarm at the Homewood Suites triggered when a resident tried fry a whole fish in his suite’s kitchen. Police are investigating a variety of incidents this week, including one in which a woman reportedly made repeated harassing phone calls to a man over two days. Last Thursday on Davidosn-Concord Road (N.C. 73), a Davidson driver going 55 mph struck a deer. And a Cornelius woman’s unoccupied GMC rolled out of its parking space at The Brickhouse Tavern and struck a nearby unoccupied Pontiac. No injuries were reported, but the Pontiac had to be towed. Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday, Feb. 14, will hear a report from its auditors on the Fiscal 2011 budget, hold a public hearing on a proposal to designate Davidson IB Middle School on South Street as a historic landmark, and vote on a plan to create a new fire district in the unincorporated areas of town.

A fire that may have started with candles left burning destroyed a home on Brinkley Street in old Cornelius early Sunday. The house at 21117 Brinkley Street, a couple of blocks off Catawba Avenue, was completely in flames when firefighters arrived just after 6 a.m. Story and photos on CorneliusNews.net.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to a Charlotte hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Friday night after a four-vehicle accident at rush hour on I-77 southbound near Exit 30. The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. on the causeway across Lake Norman north of Davidson Exit 30. Read the full story
