Firefighters from across Iredell County as well as Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville battled a house fire in Mount Mourne on Wednesday afternoon that ultimately destroyed a brick home at 225 Eastport Lane, east of NC 115.. The blaze began just before 5 pm in remote area not far from Mount Mourne fire station that lacks fire hydrants, which hindered efforts to quell the flames.

Davidson police responded to two high-value thefts, a case of breaking and entering and bank fraud, over the past week. Both cases are currently under investigation. Meanwhile, fire and police responded to an overturned vehicle on East Rocky River Road Thursday where the driver and a passenger fled the scene.

A worker with a backhoe accidentally sliced a 2-inch gas line on the Davidson College campus around 3pm Tuesday, bringing a small army of firefighters from Davidson and surrounding towns.

A fire in an air conditioning motor sent smoke into the sanctuary of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson early Saturday. Davidson and Cornelius firefighters diagnosed the problem and ventilated the building. The call was among seven firefighters handled during a busy 24 hours, which included a minor truck fire on I-77 Friday afternoon. Read the full story

Davidson fire chief Josh Peklo has stepped down and handed off his duties to an interim chief, Darin McIntosh. Peklo told town officials and fellow firefighters this weekend he’s moving to Minnesota.

Town Manager Leamon Brice announced the unexpected personnel shift at Tuesday’s Davidson Town Board meeting, where commissioners welcomed McIntosh as chief. Brice said later that he learned only over the weekend that Peklo, who also works in the theater department at Davidson College, had taken a new job in Minnesota. Read the full story

More than 750 people responded to the Town of Davidson’s recent online survey seeking feedback on conditions for biking and walking in town. Davidson officials say those responses are part of the mix as consultants and officials drafted the proposed Pedestrian Master Plan, which will be presented at a joint meeting of the Davidson Planning Board and Davidson Livability Board Tuesday, May 21. Davidson police this week issued a reminder about email scams and hoaxes after “a couple of residents” received emails they deemed suspicious, according to a town spokeswoman.  Meanwhile, police  handed out 21 speeding tickets on Griffith Street during the week of May 6 – 12. And two minor vehicle accidents, both involving tight turns while hauling trailers, occurred along Main Street.
