Mecklenburg County Natural Resources staff were conducting a prescribed burn Thursday beginning around 1pm at Cowan’s Ford Wildlife Refuge, next to Mountain Island Lake. In an alert, the county said smoke may temporarily affect visibility on Neck Road.
UPDATE: County officials said they also will be conducting a burn on Friday at 1pm.

On Nov. 5, 2014, a Cornelius police officer pulled over a driver on West Catawba Avenue for an expired registration. It began as an ordinary traffic stop, like countless others listed in the police department’s incident reports. But while walking up to the vehicle, the officer noticed something strange:

A Cornelius man was killed early Saturday after he stepped out of his car on I-77 in Fort Mill, SC, and was struck by another car.
Stephen Moshier, 57, of Cornelius, died of his injuries in the wreck, which happened at 12:45am at Mile 89 of I-77 northbound. Read the full story
