Air quality problems lurk behind nearly every transportation issue facing local governments in this area, former Mayor Randy Kincaid said Wednesday when the four-town North Mecklenburg-South Iredell Transportation Task Force gathered for the first of a planned three-month series of meetings.

Traffic snarls and other transit troubles often top the list of residents’ complaints about growth. Mayor John Woods and his newly inaugurated counterparts from Huntersville, Cornelius and Mooresville this morning announced formation of a task force to work on the problem, with a goal of delivering a regional transportation action plan by April.

For the past several weeks, even
before being sworn into office, the mayors of Davidson and three surrounding towns have been quietly studying ways to improve regional cooperation. The first sign of those efforts will come Friday morning, when the four mayors announce what apparently will be a joint transportation-related initiative. And former Davidson Mayor Randy Kincaid is expected to play a leadership role in the effort. Read the full story

North Mecklenburg voters came
out strongly in support of keeping the county’s 1/2-cent sales tax for transit and in favor of the $516 million in school bonds, signaling support for efforts to deal with growth in the region. The school bond vote will have an immediate effect on North Meck, providing a new high school in Cornelius and renovations at Davidson IB Middle School. And transit supporters say the transit vote bodes well for the north commuter rail project.

Organizers of the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green half-marathon, 5-k and fun run have announced parking arrangements and traffic restrictions on race day, Saturday, Sept. 22. About 300 participants and volunteers are expected to begin arriving on South Street before 8 a.m. for the day’s events. (Click map to enlarge)

Barriers have been removed and
the South Street extension has opened to traffic, linking Davidson with the planned 1,000-unit Antiquity development in Cornelius. Meanwhile, mayoral candidate William E. Jackson Jr. says his threat to take legal action to block the street opening is dead.

The opening of the South Street extension into Cornelius will have little immediate effect on automobile drop-off and pick-up procedures when Davidson Elementary School opens Monday, Aug. 27, though school officials and police say they’ll monitor the situation to see if changes are needed.

A three-vehicle crash forced the closure of I-77 Southbound in Huntersville around 10:45 this morning (Tuesday), backing up traffic for hours as far north as Mooresville. Traffic was halted on I-77 and slowed to a crawl on side roads. N.C. 115/Main Street in Davidson at one point was backed up to the Lowe’s corporate headquarters in Mount Mourne. Read the full story
