Davidson’s Town Clerk says she plans to step down in March and the town has begun advertising for her replacement.

If historical growth trends continue, Davidson’s population could more than double from its current 11,000 over the next few decades. That’s expected whether the proposed commuter rail line to Charlotte gets built or not, according to town planning manager Lauren Blackburn.
The rail line would only speed that growth, Ms. Blackburn said Thursday night at Town Hall, at the latest in a series of meetings to gather citizen input on development along the rail corridor.
The question is, how will Davidson develop in response to that growth? Read the full story

Since the spring of 2004, I’ve been obsessed with walking. From Dec. 14, 2004, (the day I started keeping records) to Dec.
5, 2011, I had walked 8,220 miles throughout town.
I started walking during the spring of 2004 as part of my rehabilitation after having brain surgeries—after I could be trusted to walk from McConnell to the Post Office and back.
I’ve always been an observant and analytical person, so during my years of walking I’ve made hundreds of mental notes about pedestrian safety here in town. Read the full story

Internet traffic is exploding in the U.S. and around the world, thanks to growth in video, gaming and other data-heavy online uses. That’s a positive trend for anyone in the internet business. But it also means internet providers have to keep up with the ever-growing demand for capacity.
That trend is behind MI-Connection Communications System’s recent decision to upgrade technology for about 63 percent of its Internet and data customers, executives told the system board last week. The upgrade quadruples the capacity of network connections for 6,400 customers in Davidson and Cornelius and eventually could allow the company to offer cheaper high-speed connections for businesses and residential customers, the system’s CEO said. A collection of whimsical new signs have gone up around downtown, topped with icons of local significance – a fire engines, a gnome and a farmer’s market wagon. They’re among $55,000 in new “way-finding” and parking signage being installed around town this year as the town boosts its self-marketing.
The new signs are already grabbing attention. “There are five with decorated tops,” downtown manager Kim Fleming said Friday. “We just started with five to see what the reaction would be. It’s part of our entire parking and way-finding signage program.” Read the full story
