Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities has appointed a Rate Study Stakeholder Advisory Group and is planning a series of public meetings beginning this month as it studies alternatives to the current water and sewer rate structure.

Property tax bills are going out this week, and the town of Davidson is reminding residents that they’ll see a new fee for collecting recyclables and other solid waste.
Davidson’s Town Board approved plans to charge the fee when it adopted the town budget in June. It approved the actual fee schedule at its July 13 meeting. (See fees below). The property tax rate is unchanged this year. Read the full story

The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group on Thursday issued a drought watch for the Catawba-Wateree River Basin of North and South Carolina, blaming this summer’s hot, dry weather for declining reservoir levels and stream flows.

A company called ReVenture wants to change the way communities across the country deal with waste, starting with plans for a renewable energy business park on 667 acres on the Catawba River in northwest Mecklenburg County. In approving changes in the county solid waste management plan this month, the town has thrown its support behind the idea.

Mecklenburg County water quality officials on Thursday lifted a ban on swimming in Lake Cornelius, after new test results showed no lingering effects from a sewage spill in Davidson Monday. Meanwhile, another spill was reported Monday into Lake Norman near the Peninsula neighborhood.

Mecklenburg County officials on Monday afternoon issued a swimming ban for Lake Cornelius after sewage leaked from a lift station on Peninsula Drive, in the Exit 30 area of Davidson. The leak forced cancellation of some programs at Lake Norman YMCA. Read the full story
