Police officers issued 49 speeding citations on Griffith Street last week, up from just a dozen the week before. Meanwhile, a bicyclist was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with non-life threatening injuries Saturday after being struck from behind by a passing motorist on N.C. 73. The driver in that incident was cited for improper passing. Elsewhere, two women reported that $9,300 worth of jewelry had been stolen from their River Run residence. Police in Cornelius and Davidson are investigating thefts of copper wire from local home construction sites – a type of crime they say inevitably increases when copper prices rise.
Davidson police are looking for a thief or thieves who took copper wire from two homes on James Ervin Way in the Summer’s Walk neighborhood sometime over the weekend. The wire was reported to be valued at $950, and windows were also damaged at one of the homes during the robbery. Read the full story

Cornelius police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a burglary and fire Tuesday evening in the Marina Shores apartment complex on Lake Norman. Fire officials and police said Friday the fire was arson and was likely related to the break-in and a dispute among roommates. Full story on CorneliusNews.net.

An Illinois truck driver has been charged after a multi-vehicle accident that closed or slowed traffic on I-77 in Mooresville Wednesday. Officers responded to a residence this week after a woman’s son stole $80 in cash from her and attempted to steal a piece of jewelry valued at $200. The jewelry was recovered, and police are still investigating. Also this week, a local woman was involved in a traffic accident at the Highway 73 traffic light when she accidentally ran her Jeep into the back of a stopped UPS truck. Deer continued to cause problems for motorists on Davidson-Concord Road, with the latest incident March 22 resulting in damage to a Huntersville man’s car. A driver in an Our Towns Habitat for Humanity vehicle accidentally rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of South Main and Griffith streets Thursday. No one was injured, and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. Police also responded to a report of auto vandalism at a home on Lakeview Avenue, off Beaty Street last week. A local bicyclist sustained minor injuries this week after being struck by a vehicle turning onto Davidson-Concord Road, and an east Davidson homeowner reported $525 in valuables stolen from his home following a break-in. A Catawba Avenue resident said someone stole a grill and a tiller from his yard. And Davidson College Campus Police sought help from town police after a Davidson College student reportedly threatened towards another student off campus.
