Firefighters assisted one Town Day attendee with a medical problem last weekend while standing by in Rescue 14 and rescued an individual trapped between floors in an elevator at the Davidson Clinic later in the week. An assistant chief from the fire department requested assistance from Engine 1 after coming upon downed power lines on Concord Road, as well, and a welder in the basement of the River Run Tennis Center accidentally set off the fire alarm when smoke from his project activated a smoke detector head. Firefighters responded to a number of fire alarm activations over the past week, as well as two calls to the Davidson College campus where passersby incorrectly reported seeing smoke. Meanwhile, a guest at Homewood Suites raised concerns among hotel staff when they smelled something burning in his room. Upon investigating, firefighters found that the burning smell was coming from the guest’s microwave, in which he was attempting to dry a shirt. Firefighters responded to a brush fire off Davidson-Concord Road on Saturday, and found that a passerby had put it out with a fire extinguisher. They also helped the driver of a street-cleaning truck last Friday, when he couldn’t remove a refilling hose because the hydrant refused to shut-off. Fire crews were at Davidson Elementary School Wednesday after soldering in the boiler room activated a fire alarm. The week’s calls also included a fire scare at Davidson College’s Sentelle dorm last Thursday, April 14, that was caused by a malfunctioning HVAC motor. Residents of Davidson College’s Sentelle dormitory on Dormitory Drive were evacuated shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday in a fire scare prompted by smoke in a fourth-floor dorm room. Fire officials later determined that a burned-out fan motor above the fourth floor caused the smoke. Read the full story

Firefighters responded to a total of 29 calls over the past week, including last Friday’s multi-structure fire in Cornelius and four wrecks on I-77. Firefighters also assisted an eight-year-old stuck in a tree, and put out a brush fire caused by a burning lawnmower Wednesday in River Run.
