Davidson residents quizzed commissioners Tuesday night at the latest in a series of informal “Commissioner Chats,” this time at Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street. Topics ranged from Town Hall communication and the privacy of citizens’ email addresses to the town’s new $201 trash collection fee and persistent natural gas odors on some West Side streets. Democrats in Davidson’s Precinct 127 on the east side of town will hold their annual precinct meeting next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the North Mecklenburg Republican Women recently elected officers for 2011. Davidson’s Town Board holds a “Commissioner Chat” on Tuesday, and Brian Balfour of the Civitas Institute speaks Tuesday in Mooresville about the future of state government.

Miles Atkins
Mooresville town commissioner Miles Atkins said Tuesday he plans to run for mayor in the November election. He’s the first to announce plans to run for the seat, which will be up for grabs. Embattled current Mayor Chris Montgomery said earlier this month he won’t seek re-election.
In a note to reporters Tuesday, Mr. Atkins said he’ll formally announce his candidacy in March. At that yet-to-be-scheduled event, he will “discuss his vision for the Town of Mooresville and his continued commitment and dedication to Mooresville’s citizens,” he said in the note. Read the full story

Dear Board of Commissioners and Mayor,

The Town of Davidson plans to lobby at the statehouse this year for legislation that would allow Davidson and Mooresville to keep private some information about operations of the money-losing MI-Connection Communications System. Some citizens are concerned about the move, but Davidson’s town manager says the system only wants to withhold the same kinds of marketing information as similar private businesses.
