The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board’s seat for District 1, which includes Davidson, will be filled by someone new in November, and that someone will be female. When the filing period closed at noon Friday, the District 1 ballot listed three women as candidates Robin Bradford, Rhonda Lennon and Gail Summerskill. The incumbent, Larry Gauvreau, who has been in office since 2001, did not seek reelection. Read the full story

Nick Gibietis
Nick Gibietis, a 35-year-old River Run resident and Apple computer account rep, has entered the race for Davidson Town Board. A Michigan native and Auburn University graduate, Mr. Gibietis moved to Davidson in 2008. He said downtown Davidson is “the reason I live here” and he hopes to help make it “more than what it is today.”
Filing for local offices in the Nov. 3 election closed at noon today (Friday). With Mr. Gibietis’s filing, the field now is officially crowded: Nine candidates are vying for the five board seats. Read the full story

Mickey Pettus

Mickey Pettus, a resident of the River Run neighborhood and president of its homeowners association, has entered the race for Town Board.
Mr. Pettus is the eighth candidate to announce a run for the 5-member board, which is up for election Nov. 3.

Fountain Walker
Fountain Walker filed papers Tuesday to make a second run for a seat on the Davidson Town Board. Mr. Walker, the campus police chief at Davidson College, joins three incumbents and three other newcomers in vying for slots on the five-member Town Board in the Nov. 3 election.
In 2007, Mr. Walker missed election by 45 votes, finishing sixth in the 9-candidate field with 1,013 votes.

Drew Crawford

Businessman Drew J. Crawford on Friday filed papers at the Mecklenburg Board of Elections to run for a seat on the Davidson Town Board in the Nov. 3 election. Mr. Crawford, who owns Wooden Stone Gallery on South Main Street and has been active in Downtown Davidson Inc., says he hopes to work on transit issues, on preserving and improving downtown, and on recruiting businesses and jobs.
His filing brings to six the number of candidates vying for the five Town Board seats this fall. All five seats are up for grabs, and at least two will change hands: Commissioners Evan Webster and Bill Johnson told DavidsonNews.net last week they won’t seek re-election. Read the full story

It’s Independence Day: What better occasion to set free a rehabilitated bald eagle?
Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville organized the release, which took place Saturday morning at McGuire Nuclear Station’s Energy Explorium, off N.C. 73 on Lake Norman. The occasion honored North Carolina’s veterans and fallen service members. Public officials from around the region participated, including Davidson Mayor John Woods, who was given the honor of releasing the big bird. (Mayor Woods lost a brother, James, in the Vietnam War.)
