Davidson author Paul Leonard has a new book out, titled “When the Spirit Moves,” a collection of poems, essays and vignettes about the yearnings, appreciation, and frustrations ever present in human existence. Leonard will launch the new book with a reading and book signing this Thursday, Oct. 9, from 6:30-8pm at the Davidson branch of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Read the full story

The N.C. Department of Transportation hosts two drop-in information sessions about the proposed $655 million I-77 widening project this week – Wednesday in Mooresville and Thursday in Huntersville. Representatives from NCDOT and I-77 Mobility Partners, the new company being set up to build and operate the toll lanes, will be there to show plans and answer residents’ questions. The Pumpkin Patch for Missions offers pumpkins, gourds and other fall decorations through Nov. 4 at Davidson United Methodist Church’s McKay Youth House, 260 S. Main St., Davidson. The Youth Ministries of the church hosts the annual pumpkin sale to benefit youth mission trips and activities. It’s open weekdays 11am to 7pm, and weekends 10am to 8pm.

CHARLOTTE – State and city transportation officials pitched the Charlotte City Council Monday night on why toll lanes are a good idea for I-77. After pointed questions from council members, they also walked through what the worst-case scenario for the toll project would be.
Warren Cooksey from the North Carolina Department of Transportation started with an image of a massive Chinese freeway: 19 lanes snarled with bumper-to-bumper traffic. His point was that more lanes don’t necessarily mean less traffic. Read the full story

The Pines at Davidson has taken steps to temporarily protect 78.5 acres it owns around the retirement community, signing an agreement with Davidson Lands Conservancy to manage the property as a wildlife habitat. The Pines isn’t ruling out future development, but President Eddie Muller said Monday that with no plans in foreseeable future, it approached the conservancy about the partnership. Residents headed to Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street in Davidson on Saturday to sample barbecue and play cornhole at the sixth annual FIRE! fundraiser. It’s one of the nonprofit social service center’s largest of the year, featuring a cook-off, raffle, and games.
Past years have drawn dozens of chefs from around the state to compete, tending smokers all night to prepare the barbeque. Despite lower turnout this year – with just two barbecue-cooking contestants and fewer attendees from the town – the event still drew a sizable crowd. Read the full story
