Police are investigating a series of car break-ins last weekend in the McConnell neighborhood, many of which were from cars left unlocked. The police chief said police believe the thefts are the work of local teens. Meanwhile, police investigate the theft of a Hyundai Elantra from a River Crossing Blvd. residence, and cited a man for shoplifting from the South Main St. CVS. Read on for details.

Davidson College has won another $6 million grant for financial aid from its from longtime donor The Duke Endowment. The college said the gift announced Thursday will provide $2 million a year for the next three years to help recruit students who need financial aid. Read the full story

Faith communities around the Lake Norman area are welcoming to lesbians, gays and people of all sexual orientations, Davidson College students learned Tuesday at a forum examining how religious organizations can be more inclusive of the LGBT community. The event, titled “Faithful & Affirming Spaces: A Gathering with LGBTQ-Inclusive Religious Leaders,” brought together representatives of a number of area faith communities, campus religious groups and members of Q&A, the college’s LGBT student organization. Davidson Police charged a 24-year-old magazine salesman with assault Wednesday after an altercation with a resident of the St. Alban’s neighborhood who had changed his mind about an order. Police said they also received several complaints about a Washington, DC-based group that had been knocking on doors to sell subscriptions, in violation of Davidson’s ban on solicitation.
