With new businesses setting up shop and Davidson’s population expected to grow by 50% over the next five years, the layout of the town is changing at a rapid pace. As town planners and residents debate the ways Davidson should grow, it is easy to forget that the town has been changing continuously since it was founded in the 19th century.
In a presentation at town hall on Sunday, Anelise Shrout, postdoctoral fellow in digital studies at Davidson College, will explore the town’s evolution from the 19th century to the present, using both historical and contemporary maps. Her presentation “Mapping Davidson’s Past” begins at 4pm. See the event listing in the calendar.
Davidson Town Hall is located at 216 South Main St.

The University of North Carolina School of Government has done a market analysis of downtown Davidson, and found that existing retail options fall far short of demand. The average American town has 45 square feet of retail per person – Davidson has just 17. So shoppers from the Davidson area spent $177 million outside the area last year, driving to Huntersville or Mooresville, for example, to do their shopping.
