Arciero named Kiwanian of the Year
Lake Norman Kiwanis Club recently installed Jeff Moody as its 2009-10 president.
In a banquet at the Aquesta Bank Community Room in Cornelius, the service organization also swore in other officers, heard from outgoing president John P. Miner, and honored board member Arlene Arciero as its 2008-9 Kiwanian of the Year.

Davidson Elementary Tigers on the Prowl program founders Lynn Hennighausen and Walter Rabb had plenty to smile about at Friday's kickoff event.
School calendars are now in full swing, and ours is bursting with events – from the McKinney Academy Golf Tournament to the Woodlawn School Family Fun fundraiser to the North Meck horticultural club pansy sale and the Bailey Middle community blood drive. Whew!
Besides our monthly calendar, we have news this week of a special honor for Davidson IB math teacher Cameron Swallow, the IB students named Samaritan’s Feet ambassadors, times for local school board candidate forums, and news of AP scholars at Woodlawn.

A “Jail & Bail” fund-raiser for a scholarship fund will bring dozens of NASCAR personalities and their fans to the Brickhouse Tavern in Davidson next week. Meanwhile, this week’s schedule has fund-raisers for a variety of organizations, including Davidson United Methodist Church missions, Autism Speaks, Care, ALS research, United Family Services and McKinney Academy.
Tonight (Wednesday), the Davidson College Symphony performs the first of a planned series of “Concerts for a Cause,” this time for the Hole in the Wall Gang camps. And Thursday, the newly opened Sanctuary Gallery on Main Street hosts a grand-opening with a silent auction fund-raiser for Davidson-Cornelius Day Care. Read the full story

Fifty-five Girl Scout troops from the Mecklenburg 1 Service Unit of the Hornet’s Nest Council fanned across North Mecklenburg on Saturday, Oct. 3, and collected 15,483 pounds of food for the Loaves & Fishes food pantry. The total represents almost a ton more than last year, the first year of the food drive. Read the full story
