At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Cornelius/Lake Norman Lions Club will host music historian Bob Mullen, of Huntersville, who will discuss the music of World War II.
Mr. Mullen will bring with him some of the tracks from his collection of vinyl records, originally recorded for troops overseas during the war. The records gave soldiers new music to listen to, much of it new releases from the top bands at the time.
Over the years, Mr. Mullen has collected the 12-inch “V-discs” (V for victory), and recently has transferred the songs to MP3. He will play samples Tuesday night from his varied collection, that includes big band hits, swing, classical and jazz. Read the full story

Davidson firefighters will once again be raising money this Saturday for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual “Fill the Boot” campaign. Watch for emergency personnel stationed at the intersection of Main Street and Concord Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be accepting donations as drivers wait at stop lights, but donations may also be sent to the Davidson Fire Department at P.O. Box 579, Davidson, NC 28036. Firefighters ask that checks written directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Meanwhile, firefighters put out a fire in a gas line that had ruptured and ignited during Sunday’s severe thunderstorm. Also this week, three students were freed from an elevator that was stuck in the Davidson College Chambers academic building, and firefighters assisted Mecklenburg County Medic ambulances with patients at two separate vehicle collisions (2 hurt in Concord Road crash).
Details on these calls and more (along with a tally of the week’s medical calls) may be found below.
