When MSC Industrial Supply Co. dedicates its new six-story “co-headquarters” off I-77 Exit 30 Tuesday afternoon, it will be a sort of housewarming for Davidson’s newest corporate citizen.
About 150 of the company’s 6,000 global employees are now working in the $31 million building, which MSC built over the past year on 14.7 acres along Harbor Place Drive. Many moved here in August from MSC’s original headquarters in Melville, NY, on Long Island, while about two dozen were hired locally.
So how does a giant new neighbor plug in to a new community like this? First, with lots of help. Think of it as the corporate equivalent of having lots of apple pies delivered to your front door on moving day. Read the full story

The United Way of Central Carolinas
on Wednesday announced a 2013 fundraising goal of $21,438,000, up 1.1 percent from last year’s total of $21.2 million raised. In a ceremony at the Chiquita Classic golf tournament at River Run Country Club in Davidson, the organization also accepted a $100,000 check from Chiquita Brands that helped kick off the new campaign. The next few weeks in the Lake Norman area will bring a flurry of road races and a triathlon, many with a charitable focus. This Saturday, Sept. 7, features the Andrew Lovedale 5K at Davidson College, benefitting the Access to Success (A2S) Foundation, while Sunday, Sept. 8, is the Lake Davidson Sprint Triathlon, starting and finishing at Ingersoll Rand in Davidson. Two weeks out, on Sept. 14, Summit Coffee’s Twilight Racing Series in downtown Davidson continues with the Schoolhouse Rock & Run, a fundraiser for E2D – Eliminate the Digital Divide. And coming up Sept. 21, it’s the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green Half Marathon, 10K and 5K. See more in SPORTS»
