Sunshine and warm weather surrounded the Ada Jenkins Center‘s annual FIRE fundraiser Saturday, as local residents and Ada Jenkins staff and volunteers gathered to socialize, eat barbecue and, in a new twist for 2013, to dance.
Ada Jenkins Center Executive Director Georgia Krueger expected this year’s event would raise around $30,000 for the regional community services center, on Gamble Street on Davidson’s west side. The money helps pay for the center’s variety of services, which include a food pantry, an after-school program, tutoring, free medical and dental clinics, and funds to help families struggling with rent or utilities bills to get back on their feet. When MSC Industrial Supply Co. dedicates its new six-story “co-headquarters” off I-77 Exit 30 Tuesday afternoon, it will be a sort of housewarming for Davidson’s newest corporate citizen.
About 150 of the company’s 6,000 global employees are now working in the $31 million building, which MSC built over the past year on 14.7 acres along Harbor Place Drive. Many moved here in August from MSC’s original headquarters in Melville, NY, on Long Island, while about two dozen were hired locally.
So how does a giant new neighbor plug in to a new community like this? First, with lots of help. Think of it as the corporate equivalent of having lots of apple pies delivered to your front door on moving day. Read the full story
