Davidson’s Town Board voted 5-0 on Tuesday to approve the $9.1 million 2013-14 town budget, which leaves the property tax rate and other fees unchanged and includes money for capital improvements, new equipment and equipment maintenance. And they discussed several development issues: The proposed Davidson Green School, expansion plans at Davidson Day School and a Florida developer’s plans for a big residential development off NC 73. Jane Cacchione
Jane Cacchione has joined the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center as development manager. Meanwhile, the center’s next fundraiser is this Saturday at Davidson Farmer’s Market, where market-goers can taste breakfast dishes using fresh local ingredients by guest chefs, including the center’s own chef Betsy Verhey. A crowd of Davidson residents, town and Davidson College officials, clergy, and family packed the Davidson Presbyterian Church on Depot Street Sunday evening for a prayer service in honor of Kaneisha Gaston, the first-ever Davidson College graduate with family and historical ties to the town’s African American community and to the college. Kaneisha Gaston is among the nearly 450 members of Davidson College’s Class of 2013, but she also holds a distinction: She’s the first African American with family ties in the Davidson community to graduate from the college – where her family members have worked but never studied. It also turns out she has a link to college history: An ancestor was owned by General William Lee Davidson, for whom the college was named.

Firefighters investigated a number of smoke scares this week, including one on a boat that was determined to be coming from the vessel’s battery compartment. The battery had melted, burning electrical wires and parts of the compartment surrounding it. Also this week, a passing vehicle with a tall profile pulled down telephone and cable lines from a utility pole on Jetton Street. Police officers and town maintenance personnel closed the street until technicians could respond to repair the damage.
